Rs 3,000 Crore Approved For Procurement of Brahmos Missiles and Armoured Recovery Vehicles

New Delhi, December 1: India’s Defence Acquisition Council on Saturday approved the procurement of about Rs 3,000 crore, including Brahmos Missiles, for two Indian ships to be built in Russia as primary weapon on board. The Council also approved the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles for Army’s MBT Arjun tank, designed and developed by DRDO.

The council’s approval is a considered a big step in strengthening of defence forces of the country. The decision of the council comes days after Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba’s four-day visit to Russia in November this year. The visit aimed at strengthening bilateral defence ties and exploring new avenues for defence corporation between the two countries. During his visit, Admiral Lanba met his Russian counterpart, Admiral Vladimir Korolev and had talks with General VV Gerasimov, Chief of General Staff and First Deputy Defence Minister of Russia.

It is to be known that the in recent times the bilateral defence relationship between Russia and Indian strengthened to maximum, with the friendly countries signed a USD 500 million deal for the construction of two missile frigates at Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Navy. As per the deal, Russia will also transfer technology for the constructions of the frigates.

In October, India signed a deal with Russia for $950 million with Russia to purchase two new warships equipped with Brahmos missiles for the Indian Navy – to be delivered by 2022. Considering the United States’ Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) against Russia, it is expected that payments would be made using the rupee-rouble route.

Not only for Navy, the Union government signed a deal of $5 million deal with Russia to acquire S-400 Triumf advance air defence system during Russian president Vladimir Putin’s visit to India to attend the 19th India-Russia Annual Bilateral Summit.
