Indian Air Force Orders MRSAM Missiles From Bharat Dynamics

Bhubaneswar: Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), a defence PSU under the Defence Ministry has received an order worth Rs.293.33 Crore from Indian Air Force for supply of MRSAM Missile sections. The will be executed within 24 months, said BDL in a statement.

MRSAM or Medium Range Surface to Air Missile or BARAK-8  is a high response, quick reaction, vertically launched supersonic missile, designed to neutralize enemy aerial threats – missiles, aircraft, and guided bombs, helicopters.  All services of Indian Military Army, Navy and Air Force use different variants of MRSAM.

MRSAM has been jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

The contract for development of the MRSAM programme was signed between India and Israel in 2009. The first test of the MRSAM missile system was carried out by DRDO and IAI in July 2016 at the Integrated Test Range off the Odisha coast.

Bharat Dynamics is the lead integrator of the MRSAM system. The PSU has set up a new production facility near Hyderabad at an investment of USD 100 million of Rs.757 Crore which has a capacity to produce 100 missiles per year.

Apart from BDL, private sector defence firm Tata Advanced Systems has designed and manufactured combat management system for the MRSAM Missile System.
