India on Tuesday tested a land-attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The supersonic cruise missile was test-fired at 10 am on Tuesday and it successfully hit its target, which was on another island.
India will launch multiple BrahMos missiles on Wednesday as part of the tests to validate the new capabilities of the missile system after range extension.
Land, as well as sea targets, would be engaged in the maneuvers that will be carried out in the Indian Ocean region near West Bengal.
The test was conducted by the Indian Army which has many regiments of the DRDO-developed missile system.
According to the sources, the strike range of BrahMos missile has now been enhanced to over 400 km.
The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is the world’s fastest operational system in its class. Recently the DRDO had extended the range of the missile system from the existing 298 km to around 450 km.
In the last two months, DRDO has been successful in testing both new and existing missile systems including the Shaurya missile system.
