India Laying The Highest Rail Line In Ladakh To China Border

In view of the border dispute with China, the railways have given speed to the plan to lay the track to Leh-Ladakh. After completing the primary land survey work of the strategically important Bilaspur-Manali-Leh project, the leveling work of 1500 km rail section has also been completed. The work of laying the 475 km long broad gauge track between Bilaspur to Leh Town in Himachal Pradesh has also started.

Strategic and important from the tourism point of view, the work of this railway line has continued uninterrupted even during the Corona crisis. The primary land survey of 475 km of the total rail route has been completed to identify the control point locations. 89 locations with 184 control points have been identified at important locations of bridges, tunnels, stations. The leveling of the third phase of the 1500 km route on this section has been completed. General Manager of Northern Railway, Rajiv Chaudhary said, the main purpose of leveling in any survey is to find out the elevation of the prescribed points. The construction team has completed leveling work at one of the world’s highest passes with low temperatures and low oxygen levels.

Counseling Group Giving Suggestions

Railways have formed a consultancy group for technical assistance during construction. It includes domain experts from the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, National Institute of Rock Mechanics, Bangalore, Geological Survey of India, IIT Roorkee, Institute of Snow and Avalanche Studies.

51 Percent Route Will Pass Through Tunnels

The new rail line will provide connectivity to the hilly areas of Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi, Manali, Keylong, Koksar, Darcha, Sarchu, Pang, Debarring, Upshi, and Kharuto Leh. 51 percent of this railway line will pass through tunnels. The longest tunnel will be 13.5 kilometers and the total length of the tunnels will be 238 kilometers.

Plan To Build 10 Big Bridges

There are plans to build 110 big bridges on this rail route, which will have a total length of 23 km. 31 railway stations are proposed to be built, whose total length will be 33 kilometers. The estimated cost of construction of this railway line is Rs 68,000 crore. The record for building the world’s highest rail line will be established.

What Is Strategic Importance?

If China is laying the rail track as far as Arunachal Pradesh then India is not far behind. India is building the world’s highest rail line up to the China border. Its special strategic importance is in Leh. This railway line will lay where the border of China starts at a short distance. Will be helpful in delivering logistics to soldiers. Construction of this line is considered to be the most difficult in the history of Indian Railways. The train will run at a speed of 75 kmph on this rail section.
