Chinese Troops Begin Highway Construction Projects Along LAC And Other Areas

There are plans for seven projects in Tibet, including the reconstruction of the Lhasa-Rikaze or Shigatse airport. In Rikaze, 39 approach roads are being built.

New DelhiChinese troops crossed the line of actual control (LAC) in early May, four months ago. India was building a road and a bridge in the Galwan area of Ladakh, close to the LAC. Yet, the Chinese road and bridge-building programme all along the LAC and also, approach roads towards India have been continuing unabated.

Despite the COVID-19 situation, the highway construction projects in Sinkiiang has begun. This includes 572 km of rural roads. Not far from the LAC in the Arunachal Pradesh area, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has blacktopped a road connecting the Tsona Dzong camp to the Bum La highway.

Also, north of Arunachal Pradesh, work has begun on a stretch from Tirkang to Shiyung La. At Tirkung, two mobile communication towers have come up. There are plans for seven projects in Tibet, including the reconstruction of the Lhasa-Rikaze or Shigatse airport. In Rikaze, 39 approach roads are being built.

Construction work on the Sichuan-Tibet Railway has also begun after a 52-day lockdown period. China lifted the lockdown in Tibet on March 30. Initial work for the first phase of the China Mobile Data Centre project has begun in Lhasa and is expected to be done by June next year. It is a key project in Tibet.

A residential project for both the PLA and some civilians, on hold because of COVID-19, has begun in Yume, Lhunze County in the Shannan Prefecture of Tibet. This is just north of Arunachal Pradesh.
