The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Type-075 amphibious assault ship (LHD) can be seen sailing into the sea to prepare for its tests. China’s first amphibious warship set sailed in 2019, while the second one was launched on April , as reported by the Congressional Research Service.
According to the Office of Naval Intelligence 2020 report, three Chinese amphibious assault warships are being constructed. It was explained that the Chinese Navy is focusing on a wide array of weapon acquisition programs and platforms. These include anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs), unmanned vehicles (UVs), submarines, aircraft, and surface ships.
China’s naval modernization effort also supports “command and control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems” or C4IRS. It also includes improvements in logistics and maintenance, personnel quality, doctrine, exercises, and education and training.
The report also claimed that China’s military modernization effort’s primary goal is to address the situation the country faces with Taiwan. It also aims to have greater control over the South China Sea and other near-seas regions.
China‘s New Amphibious Warship’s capabilities
The capabilities of the Chinese Navy’s new warship were detailed by the CRS report. It explained that the Asian country could use the amphibious vehicles vessels for noncombatant evacuation operations, protecting its stated claims in the South China Sea, and other military actions.

“Although larger amphibious ships such as the Type 071 and Type 075 would be of value for conducting amphibious landings in Taiwan-related conflict scenarios,” written in the CSR report.
“Some observers believe that China is building such ships as much for their value in conducting other operations,” added the report.
The war vessel can also be used for maritime security operations and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief (HA/DR). The report also claimed that China conducted its amphibious assault ship’s sea trial because of the rising conflict between Beijing and Washington D.C., which have worsened in recent months.
“The PLAN began development of the Type 075 in 2011 as a helicopter carrier that would displace about 35,000 tons – smaller than the U.S. 45,000-ton Wasp and America-class big decks,” reported by USNI News last week.
